On September 23, 2009, Mrs. Becky Massie, an art teacher at Louisa County High School, and two of her students, Lisa Kemp and Katie Combs, made a presentation to the Louisa County Rotary Club about "The Memory Project." This is a program in which members of Louisa High School's National Art Honor Society participated last year and which it hopes to do again this year.
The Memory Project is a non-profit effort begun by Ben Schumaker, of Madison, Wisconsin, through which American youth paint portraits of foreign orphans from digital images that are sent to them. The portraits are then delivered to the orphans. The portraits painted by Lisa Kemp and Katie Combs last year were of orphans in the Ukraine. The idea is to honor children in orphanages by giving them a treasured keepsake that will contribute to their sense of identity and personal self-worth.
It costs the student artists $15 per each digital image that is sent. This amount mainly covers the cost of delivering the portrait once it has been done. Last year's effort was funded by a grant that the Art Honor Society received. However, it cannot apply for the grant againi this year, so it is seeking support from individuals and organizations. If you are interested in helping to fund this project, please call Mrs. Becky Massie at the Louisa County High School.
